There seems to be more tornadoes in the United States. A recent
segment on CNN suggested that you include a whistle in your hurricane preparedness kit because if you become trapped in the debris you can attempt to alert emergency personnel to find you. Obviously this also applies to tornado safety and preparedness.
But if you're trapped after a tornado strikes you might not be in any condition to blow a whistle. You may loose consciousness. Depending on how long you're trapped you might not be awake when rescuers are nearby. I sell a product that is a perfect solution to the problem and might, God willing, save some lives.
One of the best tornado safety tips is to include a Screaming Meanie 220 in your tornado safety kit. It's powered by a 9v battery and has a Sound Beacon feature that sounds a 120 dB audio signal for 10 seconds every five minutes. It can be heard up to a mile away. Certainly there is a much better chance of it being heard than using a simple whistle. You don't have to be conscious to operate the signal. Of course you have to be conscious to turn it on. So I would suggest that you turn it on as soon as you hear the situation starting to get bad. A built in battery tester helps insure that your unit is in good shape and that you're prepared for the worst.
I'm not suggesting that the whistle is unnecessary in your tornado preparedness kit because the whistle is a great backup if the Screaming Meanie is damaged in the tornado. Have both! Have all options open when planning for tornado preparedness.
Being able to get emergency information both before and after a tornado strikes is critical...with or without power. Consider a self-powered crank emergency radio. Also consider a crank flashlight. In both cases you'll never have to worry about dead batteries or burned out bulbs...ever again.
