Interesting Facts About Mushrooms
What most people consider to be mushrooms is only the reproductive part of the organism. Mushrooms are like the fruit on trees. The primary organism is made up of thousands of interconnected thread-like structures called hyphae. The mass of hyphae is called a mycelium. You don't see the mycelium because it is hidden in the material, or substrate, in which the mushroom is growing.
There are over 10,000 known species of mushrooms in North America alone.
