Midland has a reputation for making high quality radios and the HH54VP2 is no exception. I highly recommend having a quality hand crank radio in your emergency kit. But I also recommend that your weather alert radio be battery powered or have a rechargeable battery pack. I've had a couple of hand crank radios in house that had the weather alert feature but I was unhappy with the functionality or the overall quality. The Freeplay Eyemax is a high quality hand crank radio that has a weather band but it doesn't have the NOAA weather alert feature. You definitely want an all hazard NOAA weather alert radio in your home or with you when you're enjoying the outdoors and you should look for one with Specific Alert Messaging Encoding (S.A.M.E).
You'll find out more about this further down this page.
Note: When you click on some of the links below you'll be taken to the ThunderBolt Lightning Detector Store. That's another one of my stores where
I also sell the Midland HH54VP2 weather alert radio.
Here's why the Midland HH54VP2 fits the requirements for a perfect portable NOAA all-hazard weather alert radio...
You'll automatically alerted to over 60 different types of warnings, watches, advisories and statements...
You'll be informed at home or when traveling because the HH54VP2 is portable and uses a rechargeable battery pack. It will also run on 3 AA Alkaline Batteries. You just leave on the power/charging base... using the AC power adapter... so it's always charged and ready to go. And aside from charging and powering the radio the base holds your radio securely and looks good on your desk or counter top.
You'll reliably receive and clearly hear the alerts because reception is excellent and the speaker is crisp and clear.
It's easy to use when you travel because there's a travel mode. You simply press and hold down the travel button. Your HH54VP2 then searches for and monitors the strongest NOAA weather station. As you move into another area the Midland finds and monitors the NOAA station for that area... automatically. And the S.A.M.E. Codes you programmed into the radio at setup are ignored and you'll receive all weather alerts. When you get home you simply press the travel button again to enter into the Home Mode and all the setting you programmed at setup are still there. What could be easier?
The HH54VP2 is easy to carry on your belt with the included belt clip because it's small and lightweight... it's just 3 in. x 6¾ in. x 1¼ in. and weighs just 8.3 oz including the rechargeable battery pack.
You can listen in privacy without annoying others around you because there's an earphone jack. Using the earphone jack also substantially extends the time the battery charge will last.
