Audio Locator Beacon - You're backpacking. By definition you are out in the middle of nowhere. And you know from experience that things can and do go wrong. Sprain an ankle. Break an arm or a leg. Snake bites. Or in an extreme case a boulder shifts and pins you. You know if it can happen it will and at the worst possible place and time.

You can't rely on your cell phone to call for help because depending on the terrain you won't have a signal. Depending on how long you've been out the battery is probably dead anyway.

Backpacking tips:

• Don't go backpacking alone.
  
• If you can afford it, carry a GPS Personal Locator Beacon
  
• Carry a GPS phone so that in the event your phone isn't dead you can make a connection and get help.
  
• Let people know your itinerary so if you don't show up people will know where to look.
• Lastly, include a Screaming Meanie 220 in your backpacking gear. Depending upon the terrain and weather conditions rescuers could pass within a few yards of you and never see or hear you. Once activated it will continue to sound a 120 dB audio signal for 10 seconds every ten minutes. 120 dB is an extremely loud distress signal that can be heard up to a mile or more away.
