The audio locator beacon, panic alarm and loud alarm clock features on the Screaming Meanie 220 make it an essential part of your backpacking gear for backpacking safety.
Audio Locator Beacon - You're backpacking. By definition you are out in the middle of nowhere. And you know from experience that things can and do go wrong. Sprain an ankle. Break an arm or a leg. Snake bites. Or in an extreme case a boulder shifts and pins you. You know if it can happen it will and at the worst possible place and time.
You can't rely on your cell phone to call for help because depending on the terrain you won't have a signal. Depending on how long you've been out the battery is probably dead anyway.
Backpacking tips:
- Don't go backpacking alone.
- If you can afford it, carry a GPS Personal Locator Beacon
- Carry a GPS phone so that in the event your phone isn't dead you can make a connection and get help.
- Let people know your itinerary so if you don't show up people will know where to look.
- Lastly, include a Screaming Meanie 220 in your backpacking gear. Depending upon the terrain and weather conditions rescuers could pass within a few yards of you and never see or hear you. Once activated it will continue to sound a 120 dB audio signal for 10 seconds every ten minutes. 120 dB is an extremely loud distress signal that can be heard up to a mile or more away.
You could be unconscious or simply asleep when help is near. But the Screaming Meanie will continue to sound and increase you chances of being found sooner or at all.
Personal Panic Alarm - depending where you're backpacking you may soon discover that you are not at the top of the natural food chain. When confronted by a bear, a coyote, or other predator while backpacking experts recommend making noise. Push the panic button and you will have 120dB of noise that continues until you turn it off. Rest assured that if noise works you are carrying the mother of all noise making devices.
Loud Personal Alarm Clock - After backpacking all day you want to wake up and get an early start. This alarm clock will wake you up.
Measures just 6" x 2¼". Adds no noticeable weight to you backpacking gear because it weighs only 5.8 oz. with the 9v battery installed.
